You might want to reconsider: according to a report from Britain, two British tourists were detained and then denied entry into the U.S. recently after they joked about destroying America and digging up Marilyn Monroe. The fact that the Department of Homeland Security and other authorities &mdash; including the FBI &mdash; are monitoring social media like Twitter and Facebook isn&rsquo;t that surprising.</p>

<p>The FBI is looking for <a href="../../bookmarks/fbi-looking-for-social-media-curation-tools/">curation tools</a> to curate Facebook, MySpace and Twitter... maybe the current tools fail authorities, as we can see! </p>

<p>Don't they do some background profiling before arresting and questioning people btw? Here was the joke... you'll be the judge:</p>

<p>In one way, i am glad the FBI, homeland security and anti-terrorism units from all around the world keep a close eye on what's being said or shared online, on the other end, i feel like i am being watched by Google, Facebook, my cell phone company, my car GPS, and now THEM on top of it... there is no more privacy, really.</p>

This sounds like a talent acquisition on Twitter's part &mdash; in other words, <strong>the main purpose of the acquisition was probably hiring the Summify team</strong>. Some of Summify's feature have been immediately disabled, it's no longer accepting new users, and in a few weeks, Summify says it will shut down the current product entirely. Meanwhile, the startup will be moving from Vancouver to San Francisco to work out of the Twitter office.</p>

<p>This is true in particular with the so-called Generation Y &mdash; the population born from 1980 to 2000 who are now anywhere from their teenage years to their early 30s. They are considered to be the most active internet users and were born and raised at a time when computers and the internet were already an established medium of communication. But these so-called "digital natives" are not exactly easily influenced by social media marketing.</p>

<p>The numbers speak by themselves</p>

<p><span>only 28.7% of this demographic make purchase decisions based on what friends "like" on the social networks. In contrast, the same demographic is 44.3% more likely to respond to word-of-mouth marketing, 45.9% to in-store promotion and 39.8% to online advertising.</span></p>

<p>Brands need to engage directly with their audience/customers which results in better sales and brand awarness.</p>

<p>When it comes to "word of mouth marketing", there is a lot to be done and probably one of the biggest opportunities of the future.</p>

They are considered to be the most active internet users and were born and raised at a time when computers and the internet were already an established medium of communication. But these so-called "digital natives" are not exactly easily influenced by social media marketing.</p>

<p>The numbers speak by themselves</p>

<p>Brands need to engage directly with their audience/customers which results in better sales and brand awarness.</p>

<p>When it comes to "word of mouth marketing", there is a lot to be done and probably one of the biggest opportunities of the future.</p>

  <p>LinkedIn has been shifting its attention recently – from its networking features to the value of the members in it… in other words, its sharing features. The new LinkedIn Today is a pretty impressive feature – providing a nice rundown of the shared links that are most popular, segmented by topic. 
  In my opinion, Twitter would be best served by shifting its attention from the users and starting to pay attention to their stream of content. Trending topics has long been a huge winner for Twitter, and could be an absolute goldmine. Rather than showing me a list of tweets for a user, or a constant stream of their tweets, why not show me the trending topics within my network – and a curated collage of the actual pieces of content.</p>

  <p>Twitter today started rolling out features to help shed light on the way tweeted content is received by other users. Two new tabs on Twitter’s Web site show users when their own tweets or tweets from the people they follow are favorited or retweeted.
  The tabs are only available on Twitter.com and at the moment only for a small percentage of users. Twitter does offer some exposure of favorites and other activities around a user’s personal tweets through its user stream’s API, which many developers incorporate. However, the new Activity feature exposes activity around other people’s content, which is intended to promote discovery and exploration, said Twitter spokesperson Carolyn Penner.</p>

  <p>Twitter is a wonderful communications tool and while it does many things really well, there are a few things it doesn’t do so well. One of those things is having discussions about specific topics with specific groups of people. This is often known as a TwitChat.
  I participate in a number of weekly TwitChats. These TwitChats are often very educational and can be a lot of fun; that is, for the participants. For everyone else, they can be a real hassle.
  Now, you might say that Hash Tags (#) are the solution, but they’re not. The Hash Tag evolved as a way for Twitter users to more easily find tweets on a specific topic. TwitChats are dependent upon them (just add a #Topic to any tweet and set up a search to find them).</p>
