Pinterest has managed over the past few months is spectacular. Recently reaching the milestone of 10 million users, the site has gained traction faster than just about any other site in history. But with that growth comes the responsibility to handle it and the site seems to be falling into spammer territory. A couple of hours ago (as of the time that I’m writing this), Google’s Don Dodge started tweeting that Pinterest was sending him a mass amount of emails saying that he had been followed on the site, and then asking him to follow that person back.

Black hat email marketing?

But with the average Facebook user&having 120 friends&(and many folks having exponentially more), it’s easy to see how growth of active users like this could happen in a much less justifiable way. To quote a Facebook friend of my own, “spam called. They want their idea back.”

As part of its initial filing to go public, Facebook has just revealed some new user numbers that illustrate just how big it is. It had 845 million monthly active users and 483 million daily active users as of December, for year over year growth of 39% and 48% respectively. Mobile is also half the user base, with 425 million monthly actives. Some other stats, which are a big more vague: 100 billion friend connections as of the end of last year, and 2.7 billion Likes and Comments per day during the last three months of the year.

Vadim Lavrusik, the journalist ambassador at Facebook, today pointed to a well curated media expereience that focuses on the #SOPA fiasco. I think the curation was a great idea, but I have concerns about how Facebook manages curation and how it organizes search to find curation. Right now, Vadim and I are talking this out in a comment thread on his profile, but I want to take my points and put them here. This is what I expect if I am seeking a curated moment in media. Notice that my comments evolve in to ideas about how Facebook could be better at search, what I believe to be a key component to curation. How will you find what you need to find?

Interesting idea:

My other expectation is that I can constantly visit a theme or a curated idea. In FB, I find that hard to do. I can’t — here is search again — go back to a specific point in time easily. I don’t know where to look. If I had a search capability that would allow me to input “theme” and find the themes, rather than the people, being discussed I would have an easier time locating a curated experience. Facebook actually doesn’t have to choose

Facebook currently has 800 million users worldwide. According to the study, people use Facebook to fulfill two basic social needs: the need to belong and the need for self-presentation. Facebook use is also influenced by outside factors, such as cultural background, sociodemographic variables and personality traits.

These findings account for the oft-cited "shutting off Facebook for a period of time" social experiments that we tend to see floating about the Internet. In this "Facebook detox," the user felt upset about the Facebook privacy settings, and a general sense of information overload. So, he "detoxed" for a period of 30 days.

This is true in particular with the so-called Generation Y — the population born from 1980 to 2000 who are now anywhere from their teenage years to their early 30s. They are considered to be the most active internet users and were born and raised at a time when computers and the internet were already an established medium of communication. But these so-called "digital natives" are not exactly easily influenced by social media marketing.

The numbers speak by themselves

only 28.7% of this demographic make purchase decisions based on what friends "like" on the social networks. In contrast, the same demographic is 44.3% more likely to respond to word-of-mouth marketing, 45.9% to in-store promotion and 39.8% to online advertising.

Brands need to engage directly with their audience/customers which results in better sales and brand awarness.

When it comes to "word of mouth marketing", there is a lot to be done and probably one of the biggest opportunities of the future.

Luxury goods maker Chanel has convinced a judge to order the seizure of hundreds of Internet domain names and to order the names blocked from "all" search engines and social media networks.

As soon as i read this title, i thought the same as pointed in the post:

I'm not sure how this court can direct a registry to change a domain name's registrar of record or Google to de-list a site, but the court does so anyway. This is probably the most problematic aspect of the court's orders.

I hate the new Facebook, meaning since the last big upgrade they did. I enjoyed going on Facebook before, I feel like it's a waste of my time now. Will Facebook turn things back to where they were? I say we can surely expect some kind of roll back soon, yes.

When it comes to Google Plus, i think Google has a good chance at capturing users from Facebook's mistakes, but I don't think it will every be able to dethrone Facebook as "the" social network.

Last week Facebook made history. After collecting data about its users for years, Facebook turned to designer Nicholas Felton who decided it was time to take that data to the next level and visualize it — and the Timeline was born. But what about what’s going on with the rest of the world, and not just my friends… why doesn’t Facebook have timelines for that? What was once a simple exercise of scanning one or two newspapers a day for interesting headlines and articles has escalated into repetitive scans throughout the day of multiple online news sources (Facebook feed, tweets, RSS feeds, online newspapers and blogs). And in many cases, different sources merely repeat the same story over and over again, making the apparent abundance of options misleading. So while more choice is often better, here it is simply overloading us.

Is this just curation in an infographic world, renamed Timelines?

Facebook used to require pages and individual users to have at least 25 friends in order to claim a customized address extension. That meant any newbie had to accept an ugly URL usually including a long number.
No one can remember URLs like this and they’re too long to put on your marketing materials.

This may be the bazillionth blog post written on the topic of how to get more Facebook likes. However, this isn’t going to be a post full of ambiguos advice like ‘make your page more engaging’ and ‘create a compelling landing page’!
This post is a collection of real methods for driving likes. You may already be aware of or even using some of these techniques already, but I’m hoping that everyone will be able to take away at least one of the tips presented here and apply it to their Facebook marketing campaigns.

After quietly announcing they were killing off their nascent Deals product this afternoon, Facebook caused some confusion. You see, with the decision to kill off Facebook Places earlier in the week, everyone wondered what it meant for the location-based deals they launched alongside it? Those would remain alive, Facebook said at the time. But does today’s execution change anything?
No, says Facebook. Daily Deals are separate from Check-in Deals. The Check-in Deals will work a bit different with the end of Places, but the company will continue to support and enhance that product. Daily Deals are dead — and my email account thanks them for that.

If you have a business fan page, you want those fans to see your posts, right? Well, the chart above shows that fan page owners are grossly overestimating how many people they’re reaching through posts.
Keeping your fans engaged daily and arousing their desire for your offering must be part of your fan page strategy, or you’re wasting the opportunity to stay visible and get sales.
There may be cases where a one percent feedback rate is not possible, especially if your fans don’t have much in common that they’re passionate about. This is more likely the case for fan pages that prioritize high fan counts ahead of targeting good potential customers. But you can see from the numbers above that high fan counts are deceiving.

I was checking on natural rankings for one of our websites today and noticed a rank help by Facebook for this specific product search in Google.

The Facebook page is ranking #6 for that term, and as you can see above, it's clearly spam, some kind of "casino" type of spammy site i won't even bother linking too.

It's very interesting, it showcases yet again how Google can be gamed by spammers, using a powerful social site like Facebook.

So how can Google actually and honestly rank this FB page first page result? There is no content, the outgoing link is not relevant and has nothing to do with shoes... i guess all it matters for Google is:

page_title == search terms

site authority - which clearly FB has

search terms in URL

H1 on the page == search terms

It's sad and frustrating as a site owner, but this definitely proves that Google HAS to change the way they look at content, and part of this change is going to be supported by social search and curation.

Research from advertising agency DDB Paris found that amongst the top reasons for Liking a brand were: “to take advantage of promotional benefits”,” to be informed of new products offered by the brand”,” to access exclusive information” and “to give my opinion about the brand”. Four very clear reasons to bother, which could easily be affixed or suffixed onto any “Find us on Facebook” message for greater impact.

Some brands have found interesting ways to incentivise people to make the jump:

• Dingo, a dog food brand from Ohio, included a promotion that would only kick-in when the Facebook page reached 5,000 fans (from a base of 300). They had an unprecedented take-up, with fans forwarding on the email to their friends and encouraging sign-ups to get the offer. They hit the 5,000 mark in just 3 days.

• Bag retailer Timbuk2 included an opportunity to win a bike, helmet and messenger bag in an email to its 100,000 newsletter subscribers. It received 6,500 clickthroughs vs. just 9 from its generic social call to action.

Will a billion acts of green save the planet? Nope. But that doesn't stop us from trying to make every small step count, literally, this Earth Day.

Facebook has teamed up with Earth Day Network to create and promote a "green" app encouraging all of us to take a small step towards saving Mother Earth. Pretty cool! What will you pledge tomorrow? I'm going to walk everywhere (as usual), and be more conscious about turning off the lights when I don't need them. Luckily our big window faces toward the sun so there's plenty of light all day!
