It's sometimes hard to find content ideas when building new websites. Here is a list of good content ideas for curation.
Longform.org posts new and classic non-fiction articles, curated from across the web by GOOD pals Max Linsky and Aaron Lammer.
Longreads is similar to Longform, and lets you search by article length.
LadyJournos! is curated by GOOD's executive editor Ann Friedman, a go-to source for excellent writing by up-and-coming women journalists.
Give Me Something to Read is a hand-picked selection of articles and essays saved with Instapaper.
The Electric Typewriter has a bit more of an archival feel, reposting many journalistic classics along with some new stuff.
The Best of Journalism is an email-subscription service ($1.99/month) of recommended reading, curated by Atlantic staff writer Conor Friedersdorf.
Interesting model.
Experts from the online service curate titles based on your likings/preferences (you take a quizz when you signup) and then it's a subscription based model: monthly, bi-monthly, annual. It goes anywhere from $85 to $395 depending on the number of books you want to receive per year.
One interesting option for them might be to provide for the service for a lower fee for digital editions...
The first sentence lays it down pretty well:
How do you stand out in a crowded market with a sizeable number of players competing mostly on low prices and free shipping? By differentiating yourself.
Some specifications about the business model:
As reminded in this article, the curators bring knowledge, expertise in the curation process:
The talent [curators] are experts in their field who are passionate about what they do. They share content and recommendations as to how to get the most out of the products
... thus the success for these membership sites.
Some examples:
At Loku, we make it fun and easy to tap into the local scene. Catch the latest buzz and stories, discover new things to do, and get the inside tips on restaurants and bars around town. If you're a local expert-on anything from food trailers to art galleries-you can rate your favorite local spots for others to enjoy.
Created by Fatma Yalcin (MIT) and Eugene Gorelick, Curisma helps you discover and buy cool tech products you love through personalized recommendations and deals, combining community-sourcing with machine learning.
Set up a membership site and let all of those local small businesses know you’re creating a network. For a monthly fee they can have their own web page on your site and they can fill it with whatever content they like – pictures, special offers, news, gossip, whatever they want. Let them know that you’re paying for the hosting and you’ll handle all the promotion, all they need to do is sign up and start filling up their page. If you’ve never seen a networking site, check out LocalHarvest.org. This is a national site, but it’s searchable using zip codes. You’ll see that each member farm or business has the opportunity to build their own page within the site and there are different levels of sponsorship available. You wouldn’t need to build such an elaborate site if you’re just going to work locally, but it will give you an idea of how it works.
- It acts as a repository for all of your content
- It can easily accommodate oddball content like videos and photo galleries
- It can import content from your blogs or Twitter accounts via automatic feed
- It automatically optimizes all of your content for Google
- It enables users to easily share the content with others
- And, most important, it allows users to access relevant content from the most logical places — attorney ?bio pages or practice area sections. (A good publishing platform would never redirect users to other sections of the website to read an article or watch a video.)
Is that a kung-fu move by Steve?
In the final part of my interview with web video curation expert Steve Rosenbaum, we share some recommendations for you to gather and organize rich and relevant video content from multiple sources for your website – which can improve your search visibility and link popularity, and help you be a trusted source in your area of business or professional expertise. Good curation of video content does require having a strategy. And by strategy, I mean deciding how much effort you’re going to put in doing manual research, viewing, reviewing, and vetting. Simply throwing up video content that might show up in YouTube or any search engine around keywords you’re targeting is not curation.
