I don't consider myself a geek, for one, I hate maths, not a great techy dude either.
But if I could buy any new electronic toy out there just to play with it (ie: iPhone...hmm hmm), I would!!!
I bet a lot of people would say that's geeky, but I'm no real geek, not even close from it.
Real geeks to me are the kids you see on Discovery channel building robots from cans and old cell phones :) or the guys from the Mythbusters tv show, oh yeah, geeks big time!
Well Bobosse i partially agree with you, yes the examples you mentioned are the extremities they are the best of the best but like in any profession/hobby/job there is for each person a level of involvement. I believe there some that are less geeky and some that define the word geek, like some Japanese kids that master robotics like there was nothing.
I consider myself partially geek because i spend of lot of time learning almost everything i can find about technology, especially nanotechnology and cryogenics/computers( soft and hard) / gadgets/ games but in the same time i don't get involved in the deeper activities like math(i hate it), chemistry or anything else, I'm just very interested about new things and how they work. Without going in the math and calculation details.
I think a geek is a person that has a continuous hunger for information, driven by the goal of creating at some point new things by himself. to bring innovations in some domains, i think that is a true geek.
I sit in front of a computer for at least 12 hours a day - I think that makes me qualified! ;)
if you rather be on a computer then take a vacation your probably a geek. If you rather watch youtube then watching tv. you might be a geek. if you have a date and you time how long till you get back to blogging you are a geek.
gosh im guess i have been qualified as a geek long time ago... *i think*.. this is what i do
- i dont read books, but ebook.
- i spend everyday on my laptop + internet almost 18 hours.
- i eat my breakfast and lunch infront my laptop
- i read news - online
- i dont watch tv, but i download the series
- i dont listen to the radio, i have my mp3s on laptop
- all important notes i will type it on my laptop
- i dont use pen anymore, and the worst part my handwriting getting bad
- i seldom go out with friends, but i enjoy myself with my online friends
- i use messenger more than my mobile
- i prefer people to email me rather than talking on the phone
- if im out, i will be the first person to go back home
- i blog about my cats
- etc.
do u think im qualified enough? eheheh thats sound scary right, i know.. im just human being not alien :P .. friends say "get a life".. i guess i have a virtual life :p
Haha, man get out a little, no disrespect but your body needs some exercise, you can't "keep it in the house" all day long.
U have friends that got very sick and spine problems due to sitting all day long every day in front of the PC.
They recovered by going to the gym and eating healthier, please take care.
I know I am a geek, well I prefer nerd. I know know why, I just like the term better. Either way, I have a server in my basement. I own robotics equipment, and I program more than I write...

On the whole a geek is a person who dedicates his time to becoming very very good at something technical. Do that with something arty and we call 'em gifted.
I'm on computer at least 9hrs. per day, but I'm not a geek. I play my computer games both own'd & online about half the time, & mess w. CAD once in a while, but I'm no geek. I view the news about military, politics, war, health, & games, but I'm no geek. If ya think I am, let me know. I'm more of a political, history, religion, & military GURU. Naw, really... I am THE BOSS of my company here also. Ya!
Ah! BTW, I'm prior military & journalist. I haven't my info. of the things I know mainly from news. I actually do real research, not "wiki" crap, etc. where info can be alter'd at less than a moment's notice.
