Zees Turned Conversations
We implemented “zees” a month or two ago on a whim. We emulated Twitter on the notion that people in a community might share random thoughts. A zee is a quick thought, what’s going on, make a statement, or ask a question.
As the days go by, I’ve been witnessing some interesting behavior. Zees certainly haven’t taken off like twitter has by any stretch. The times that zees get used, usually turn into a short conversation. But the conversation gets stunted. This is probably because of the format. And like in Twitter, I find that I often want to reply to a previous post but I feel like it’s not really the purpose and I’d be just messing up the place.
Zees feel like conversations wanting to bust out. So who are we to stop that?
Therefore, I give you zees, version 2. Or zees on steriods.

Zees can now be replied to, and these replies appear under the zee in a message board like fashion.
You can view all Zees, only the zees in your communities, or in a single community.
You can post a zee in a specific community or in a general discussion area.
You can sort by date of entry or last reply date. You can search.
You can have fun. Go on. Post away!

Nice work Scott. I think it goes without saying that this is one of the more important elements here — or any social networking site.
Couple of suggestions though.
It would be nice to relabel the menu item “Discussions” to “Zees”. It took me almost all this time to make the correlation between the two. I think it would somebody who is new to these types of sites to easily understand them better.
And on the subject of new, as in new members, perhaps a special Zee category for introductions. I have seen too many of these just roll off the front page in a matter of minutes.
If they were isolated in their own prominent area that everyone was aware of, then I think a lot of older members would jump right in there and give them some warm welcomes. Plus it would be a Zee that they could more easily communicate through if they are experiencing problems or need a little help.

Thanks. we’ve got some major changes coming in this area to make this all easier to understand and follow.
We’re probably going to go the other way, and just call zees discussions.
great suggestions on the new member intros. we’ll see what we can do there.

Speaking of following … I couldn’t remember how to find this post to come back and check it.
I have to admit, and no disrespect, I cannot find my way around here at all. Of course, I cannot find my way around in BlogCatalog or MyBlogLog either … the formats are all different and confuses the bejeezus out of me.

Yeah, it doesn’t help that this is technically a separate blog.
And no offense taken.
This place grew up REALLY fast and the navigation couldn’t keep up. We’re playing catch up now, simplifying where we can.
